smile of death (a translation)

Posted on Saturday, August 11, 2012

Night reveals

the things that

will not emerge.

After each sound

after each slight fall

death laughs.

The things that will not emerge

smile in the dark.

No one has heard the laughter

and yet everyone knows

that death is there.

My interpretation and translation of Fernando Luis Chivite’s “Poema de la sonrisa de la muerte,” a poem from a book I purchased while on the camino in Comillas, Spain.
